KABUL (SW): President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani, first lady Bibi Gul, and Chief Executive Officer Abdullah Abdullah among other top officials on Saturday launched voters' registration process.

Speaking on the occasion, President Ghani stressed rigging and interference in the affairs of the Independent Election Commission (IEC) would not be tolerated. He made it clear stern actions would be taken against meddling in electoral affairs.

The President also urged the Taliban to take part in the forthcoming district and parliamentary elections.

The CEO Abdullah underlined security as a serious challenge, and stressed upon alternative ways to ensure voting in restive areas.

This comes as 13 out of 314 polling stations in Balkh, 20 out of 50 polling stations in Kunduz, 20 out 38 polling stations in Sar-i-Pul and many more in other provinces remain under threat.

Separately, the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) hailed the voters' registration drive. However, members stressed the government should take immediate steps to provide identity cards to those 40 per cent citizens living in remote and restive parts of the country.
