Voters’ registration gains momentum amid glitches

KABUL (SW): The voters’ registration process for the forthcoming district and parliamentary elections is gaining momentum amid glitches surrounding it in different provinces.

Dawood Siddiqe, provincial head for the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in Herat, informed the number of people registering them is on the rise. Without sharing a concrete figure, he said 60 per cent of those showing up for registration are men while 40 per cent are women. The regional IEC head informed a total of 462 polling stations would be set-up in Herat.

In neighboring Farah province, Governor Abdul Basir Salangi, blamed Pakistan for striving to sabotage the electoral process. Salangi urged the Farah residents to defy all obstacles in this regard, and come out to vote.

A number of protesters have set-up camp in front of the IEC regional office in Ghazni demanding the government to change constituencies. Salam Watandar wished to have the views of the IEC on this matter, but to no avail.

Officials in Bamyan lamented that the main glitch here is the fact that not all residents possess identity cards. Only seven thousand potential voters have so far registered in Bamyan’s 32 registeration centers.

Tight security measures have been put in place for the registration process in Logar. Police Chief Esmatullah Alizay has vowed to extend the registeration process to the restive districts as well. Governor Mohammad Anwar Khan Ishaqzay has urged religious scholars and local elders to encourage the potential voters to register themselves at the IEC.

The IEC launched the registration process in district centers across the country last week. In the second phase, the registration process would commence in districts nationwide.
