TALUQAN (SW) – The voter registration centers in Takhar’s Namak Aab district remain closed since past two weeks due to security concerns.
Officials at the Independent Election Commission (IEC) in Takhar informed the third round of voter registration began last month, but all three registration centers in Namak Aab remain shut due to security threats. Ruhullah Mosawi, provincial head of IEC, said in this regard only one center has been re-opened, but persistent threats might led to the closure of that center as well.
“I have been in touch with the police headquarters and security officials, the people want these registration centers to get functional, our teams are ready, but the security officials have so far failed to ensure security”, he said.
Meanwhile, Khalil Aseer, spokesman for the police headquarters, has noted that the presence of the Taliban as well as tribal feuds are hindering re-opening of these centers. He said the police chief and district governor of Namak Aab are busy in sorting out differences to re-open these centers.
Besides the security threats, the locals have also blamed unhealthy competition among local politicians for the closure of voter registration centers.
