LASHKARGAH (SW): A number of fresh US soldiers have arrived in southern Helmand province to counter the advancing Taliban in this restive part of the country.
Umar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor told Salam Watandar that the Americans have landed at the provincial capital Lashkargah’s Bost Airport. Without disclosing the number of the US troops, he said they would remain in Helmand for as long as needed, and would provide aerial and ground support to the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) in their campaigns against the rebels.
The spokesman for the governor added that these troops would also come handy in improving security for Lashkargah as well as a number of restive districts. According to the locals, the US Apache helicopters, and fighter planes have been roaring in the skies across Helmand province for the past two days now.
Meanwhile, Abdul Majeed Akhundzada, deputy speaker for the provincial council believe the arrival of US forces in Helmand would leave positive impacts on the moral and discipline of the ANSF. Officially, the exact number of US troops deployed in Helmand is not disclosed but it is estimated that around 300 of them are stationed in Lashkargah.
