NEW YORK (SW): The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday deliberated upon threats to peace and security caused by terrorist acts in Afghanistan.
The UNSC discussed the UN Secretary-General António Guterres’ latest report on the situation in the war-ravaged country. In this report, Secretary-General Guterres has noted that the National Unity Government (NUG) continued to prioritize its reform agenda, with an emphasis on anti-corruption measures and security sector reform, in the face of ongoing security and governance challenges.
He has noted that although electoral preparations by the Independent Election Commission faced setbacks, political groups continued to coalesce around the prospect of parliamentary and district council elections. The security situation remained highly volatile, as the Taliban and Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIL-KP) showed continued capacity for inflicting mass casualties amid increased Afghan and international air strikes, he noted.
