KABUL (SW): Abdullah Abdullah, Chief Executive Officer of the National Unity Government, on Tuesday oversaw the formation of Afghanistan’s pioneering union of chilgoza pine (a variety of pine) traders.
Speaking on the occasion, Yahya Khan Zadran, head of this newly formed union, said the government should invest and pay more attention towards promoting cultivation, processing and trade of this valuable product. It is planned facilities to properly process and pack pine nuts would be established in Kabul, Paktia, Khost, Nangarhar and Laghman.
CEO Abdullah underlined the importance of public private partnership for the economic growth of the country. He said there is huge potential and opportunities for growth in the agriculture sector. He lamented that Afghanistan has many best quality export products, but are shipped abroad under the labels of neighboring countries.
It was noted on the occasion that Afghanistan is producing up to 33,000 metric tons of chilgoza pine on yearly basis with market value of up to $ 800 million. A large quantity of it is exported abroad through Pakistan.
