JALALABAD (SW): Unidentified armed men robbed a currency exchange market in Jalalabad on Wednesday, killing one person (a money changer), and injuring several others, despite taking all their money with them.

Following this incident, the Union of Money Changers, on Thursday organized a protest rally and demonstration across the country, and closed their money changing markets in Kabul, Nangarhar, Badakhshan, Paktia, Takhar and a number of other provinces.

The money changers of Sarai Shahzada in Kabul rallied on the streets in protest against this incident, and called upon the government to provide them security and prevent them from being kidnapped and killed. By issuing a resolution, the Union of Money Changers across the country demanded from the government that in addition to providing them security, the perpetrators of the murder of a money changer in Jalalabad should also be arrested.

Meanwhile, about 300 money changers in Nangarhar poured on the streets in Jalalabad to protest yesterday’s incident.

Ajmal Rahmani, Chairman of Union of Money Changers of Nagarhar, said that several weeks ago, the governor promised to provide them security, but the promise was not kept.

Attaullah Khogyani, spokesperson for the Governor of Nangarhar, acknowledged the problems faced by money changers and traders in this province. However, he called on the citizens to cooperate with the security forces in ensuring security in this province. Mr. Khogyani added that the government is committed towards ensuring the safety of the residents of this province.
