U.S. President declares ‘twitter war’ on Pakistan

02/01/2018

KABUL (SW): The U.S. President Donald Trump began the New Year by launching an attack on Pakistan in his first tweet of 2018.

The President has stated:''The United States has foolishly given Pakistan more than 33 billion dollars in aid over the last 15 years, and they have given us nothing but lies & deceit, thinking of our leaders as fools”. President Trump added Pakistan was providing “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt”.

President Trump’s remarks on Twitter has resulted in Islamabad summoning the US Ambassador. Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Khwaja Mohammad Asif responded to the message: “We will answer to Trump’s remarks but not on social media”.

Although, such messages and reactions reflect the peak of the tension in US-Pakistan relations, however, the experts in Afghanistan believe that relations between Pakistan and US are mutually reinforced by the intelligence agencies of both countries, not the tweets.

According to analysts, Pakistan’s position and its relations with the countries in the region will cause the U.S. to refrain from putting immense pressure.

Javid Kohistani, an expert on military affairs, said the two countries do not have any major issues from the point of view of the intelligence agencies of the two countries. Mr. Kohistani added that the U.K. is one of Pakistan’s supporters in its relations with the U.S. and is working to maintain ties between Islamabad and Washington.

Kohistani said the recent tweet by President Trump has more individualistic character, saying that “the President of the United States is a man with no focus”. According to Mr. Kohistani, such acts were carried out to control the public opinion.

However, Kabul Khan Tadbir, another expert on military affairs, believed that the words of the US President will have the subsequent practical side. According to Mr. Tadbir, Afghanistan’s position on Pakistan has pushed the U.S. to put more pressure on Pakistan.

Meanwhile, the Afghan government claimed that the pressure of Washington on Islamabad is a result of the policies of Kabul.

Shah Hussain Mortazavi, deputy head of the Office of the Spokesperson for Presidential Palace, in a video broadcast to the media, said that Trump’s verbal attack on Pakistan is an indication of Afghanistan’s active foreign policy.

The Afghan government, after Mohammad Ashraf Ghani took office of the President, made efforts to improve relations with Pakistan, and these efforts even led the officials of the two counties to visit each other several times, however, after Pakistan failed to fulfill its promises to Afghanistan, the relations soared between the two countries and have not improved.
