U.S. ‘friendly fire’ kills Afghan policemen in Helmand

KABUL (SW): The U.S. and Afghan security officials have launched investigation into a deadly air strike that has reportedly killed up to 17 policemen in Grishk, Helmand.

Umar Zwak, spokesman for the provincial governor, told Salam Watandar a U.S. air strike hit Aab Pashak area of the district on Friday leaving a number of policemen and other people dead. He said investigation into the incident has begun.

The United States Forces-Afghanistan (USFOR-A) has acknowledged the deadly incident. “During a U.S. supported Afghan National Defense and Security Forces (ANDSF) operation, aerial fires resulted in the deaths of the friendly Afghan forces who were gathered in a compound. We have notified Afghan officials of this incident. An investigation will be conducted to determine the specific circumstances that led to this incident”, it said in a statement.

Locals have told Salam Watandar that up to 17 policemen have died in this attack. They added the policemen were busy erecting security check posts after reclaiming the area from the Taliban.
