KABUL (SW): James Mattis, the Defense Secretary of United Unites, landed in India on Monday night. He is meeting his Indian counterpart to discuss Indo-U.S. defense ties.
Although the U.S. Department of Defense officially did not say anything about the role of India in Afghanistan, a number of Indian media have speculated that James Mattis will call on India to send troops to Afghanistan.
According to the Indian Express, James Mattis would meet his Indian counterpart Nirmala Sitharaman, National Security Advisor Ajit K Doval and also call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This is the first Cabinet-level visit to India under the Trump administration.
As U.S. Defense Secretary visits India, the Pentagon in a statement has praised the Indo-U.S. ties and called India’s role in south Asia effective.
It is a debutant visit of a U.S. secretary of the Donald Trump administration.
