KABUL (SW): According to the Jamiat-e-Islami party, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul has called for a political settlement to the rift created between the JI and the Arg (Presidential Palace) over resignation of Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor.
Abdul Satar Murad, Chairman of the Political Committee of the Jamiat-e-Islami party, has said the Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Kabul Annie Pforzheimer told him in a meeting the U.S. would not interfere in the issue, and both sides should end the tensions through dialogue. He told Salam Watandar that the Deputy Chief of Mission called on Jamiat-e-Islami leaders to decide in favor of the Afghan people.
The Arg announced the acceptance of Atta Mohammad Noor’s resignation from his post last week, which was signed by Noor a while ago. However, hours later the news was rejected by Mr. Noor, the Chief Executive of Jamiat-e-Islami party, and the governor of Balkh. He said that this resignation was submitted months ago with conditions, but was no longer valid because the Arg didn’t respect the demands of the Jamiat-e-Islami party.
Subsequently, Jamiat-e-Islami also released a statement saying that the decision of Arg regarding the unseating of Atta Mohammad Noor is a “monopolistic action” and that the Jamiat-e-Islami as one of the main partners in the National Unity Government is opposing the decision of the Presidential Palace.
The political tension has been continuing between the Arg and Jamiat-e-Islami party, and the Presidential Palace has not yet formally expressed its views on the issue.
