KABUL (SW) – At least two U.S. soldiers were killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan, the NATO-led Resolute Support mission said in a statement on Wednesday.

“In accordance with U.S. Department of Defense policy, the names of the service members killed in action are being withheld until 24 hours after notification of next of kin is complete,” it added.

The Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahed, claimed in a statement that a chinook helicopter was shot down in Logar province killing all 54 local and Afghan forces.

Meanwhile, the NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, has welcomed the release the two professors at the American University in Kabul that have been held in captivity by the Taliban. He was addressing a presser after the meeting of the North Atlantic Council at the level of Foreign Ministers in Brussels on Wednesday.

"We also commend President Ghani for his bold decision that made this possible. These are confidence building measures. Hopefully they can move us closer to the resumption of the peace talks and therefore also lay the ground for a political negotiated solution to the conflict, the crisis, in Afghanistan", he said.
