Turkmenistan suspends power supply

01/01/2018

HERAT CITY (SW): Local authorities in Herat have said Turkmenistan has cut off supply of electricity to Afghanistan on demands for rise in tariff.

Waheed Kamran, director Da Afghanistan Breshna Sherkat (DABS) in Herat, told Salam Watandar that the Turkmenistan authorities have raised the tariff from two $ 2 cents to $ 4 cents per kilowatt. He added that the negotiations on this issue have been underway for a month now, but no consensus has reached. The DABS chief noted efforts are underway to bring additional electricity from Iran for affected places in Herat.

Meanwhile, Naheed Farid, member of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) from Herat, has claimed the talk about $ 4 cents per kilowatt is nothing new, the consumers have been charged this rate for three years now. She asserted there are other reasons behind the cut in electricity supply from Turkmenistan to Herat and Faryab provinces.

Kamran Alizay, chairman of the provincial council, has charged the DABS for its alleged inefficiency in this matter.

It is worth noticing Afghanistan imports up to 70 per cent of electricity consumed in the country from Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Iran, and only 30 per cent is produced at home.
