KABUL (SW) – Analysts believe President Donald Trump’s recent trip to Afghanistan was aimed at domestic politics in the U.S.
The U.S. President arrived in Afghanistan on his maiden trip on Thursday night, announcing readiness for talks with the Taliban. Trump said the Taliban are seeking an agreement and the US is working closely on this.
Political analyst, Mohammed Moussa Jafari, said Donald Trump is seeking a peace deal with the Taliban to offer it to the US citizens as an achievement in the presidential election campaign. According to him, there are no positive prospects for Afghanistan in the proposed peace deal between the U.S. and Taliban, and most of what the U.S. and the Taliban want.
Akram Arefi, another political scientist, said that the prospect deal could prove as a major achievement for Trump in the forthcoming presidential polls. However, he cautioned it will be difficult to reach a peace deal because the Taliban are not willing to negotiate with the Afghan government.
Mir Rahman Rahmani, speaker of the Wolesi Jirga (lower house), said during the house session here on Saturday that national consensus must first be formed before direct dialogue with the Taliban begins.
Trump’s comments on Taliban's willingness to agree on ceasefire comes as one of the Taliban spokesman, Suhail Shaeen, had earlier told Salam Watander that the group was ready to first sign the deal with the U.S. and the issue of ceasefire is a part of it.
