KABUL (SW) – Donald Trump, President of the U.S, has cast doubts over the success of talks with the Taliban for peace in Afghanistan.
In a series of tweets on Wednesday, the U.S President noted that negotiations are proceeding well in Afghanistan after 18 years of fighting. ‘Fighting continues but the people of Afghanistan want peace in this never ending war. We will soon see if talks will be successful?” he questioned.
Meanwhile, Ryan Crocker, former U.S ambassador to Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Syria, Kuwait and Lebanon, has criticized the proposed deal between the U.S and the Taliban.
In an op-ed in the Washington Post, he stated the Taliban refuses to negotiate with the Afghan government, considering the government the illegitimate puppet of the U.S. occupation, and by acceding to this Taliban demand, US has delegitimized the government it claim to support.
He stressed President Trump can follow Obama’s example of Iraq and leave the country to the Taliban, or he can make clear that the United States has interests, values and allies, and will stand behind them
