KABUL (SW) – Analysts on Monday expressed optimism over recent trip by the top U.S. officials to Afghanistan.
On Sunday, the U.S. Secretary of Defense, Mark Esper arrived in Kabul besides Speaker Nancy Pelosi leading a bipartisan congressional delegation to visit Afghanistan.
Commenting on these trips, political analyst Muhibullah Sharif, said the Taliban are pushing for the revival of the peace talks. He added these trips indicate the proposed talks in future would be different from the previous ones and the issues of ceasefire as well as the participation of the Afghan government would be on the agenda.
Sharif stressed the U.S. as well as the international community wants no more continuation of war and expenditure of funds in Afghanistan and hence seek peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Akbar Jan Polad, another expert on political affairs, said a consensus has been reached in the U.S. for genuine peace in Afghanistan. He added latest regional geostrategic dynamics among regional powers such as China, Russia, Pakistan, Iran and India have proved good for Afghanistan. He expressed optimism that the recent trips by the top U.S. officials would prove fruitful for the peace process.
However, political commentator Shah Baz argued that the failure of nine-month talks compelled the top U.S. officials to seek a new strategy. He added Washington is looking for stability in Afghanistan.
