NURISTAN (SW): Officials at the Directorate of Women's Affairs and some members of the Nuristan Provincial Council said that because the cases of violence against women in Nuristan province has not been pursued by the judicial institutions and authorities, people have been taken their cases to the Tribal Councils.
Zahid Faizan, head of Directorate of Women’s Affairs in Nuristan told Salam Watandar that in the current year, 45 cases of violence against women have been registered with them and all of them have been solved.
However, Nuristan’s Provincial Council Chairman, Saadullah Payenda said that lack of trust on judicial institutions and authorities has caused the residents to resolve their cases through the tribal councils. According to him, the local administration in Nuristan has failed to solve the issues of the residents.
Sayed Mohmand, the spokesperson for the Governor of Nuristan told Salam Watandar that cases of violence against women are being resolved in the Tribal councils due to their lack of access to justice and failure of judicial institutions in the province.
Sabrina Hamidi, regional director of Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIRHC) in the eastern part of the country, said that AIRHC had not been active in Nuristan for two years due to insecurity and destruction of roads. However, she adds that AIHRC has been monitoring and reviewing human rights cases through letters and telephone calls with the local authorities and the victims and their families.
Last year, 75 cases of violence against women have been filed in Nuristan province, of which 27 cases were resolved by the Tribal Councils.
