HERAT CITY (SW): Local officials at the traffic department in western province Herat said that the campaign against road accidents in the province has paid off.
They claimed that raising awareness classes on traffic regulation has reduced traffic accidents in the province.
Aminullah Maihanyar, Head of Herat Traffic Department told journalists that they have registered as many as 187 cases of road accidents which compared to the previous year indicate a decrease in the number of road accidents.
He said that road accidents have decreased by 35 percent in the province.
Aminullah Amin, police chief at the Herat highway, however said that many drivers who pass the highways drive carelessly and never obey the traffic regulations. He also complained about influential men who interfere in their affairs.
He said that careless driving has claimed 29 lives over the current year at the highway.
He added that considering the province’s population, lack of enough personnel at the Herat Traffic Department is a major challenge which they expect to be tackled as soon as possible.
Nisar Ahmad, the deputy to the Provincial Directorate of Transport in the province, however said that poor condition of the highways and insecurity have also led to many accidents.
