Traders on the run from Kunduz

KUNDUZ CITY(SW): As many as 18 jewelers with their capital worth some $ 10 million have fled northern Kunduz province due to deteriorating security situation. 

Haji Jalil, head of Jewelers’ Union said that as many as 7 children of jewelers and currency traders have been abducted for ransom over the past one month alone. He added that the situation has deeply affected businesses and social life in the province. He said that insecurity and abductions have forced many businessmen to flee the province, and seek refuge elsewhere in the country or abroad. 

Abdul Ahad, head of currency exchange traders’ union in the province, has also expressed his deep concerns over the current disturbing security situation. He said that if the government did not take swift measures, all businessmen would leave the province, which would paralyze economy in the country. 

Gen. Muhammad Qasim Jangle Bagh, the police chief in the province, however acknowledged that the security situation was not ideal in the province. He assured the residents that police would do its best to secure the province and restore order. He added that a number of the kidnappers have been arrested and efforts to arrest the rest are underway.
