HERAT CITY (SW) – Traders in Herat province claim the recently imposed limit on the amount of USD they can withdraw from banks has caused troubles for them.
In a protest gathering at the Herat Chamber of Commerce and Industries, the traders said since a few months, businessmen cannot easily withdraw their dollars from the banks of the province. They said despite having millions of dollars in their bank accounts, they can only withdraw $ 10, 000 in a month.
Sayed Khatibi, chairman of the HCCI, criticized the government’s policy and warned if the government failed to resolve the problem the traders will transfer their wealth abroad. According to him, in some instances banks even decline to pay $ 5000 in a month.
However, according to the private banks, the policy is aimed at curbing illegal transfer of dollars out of country.
According to officials at the Ghazanfar Bank and the Afghan United Bank, the Da Afghanistan Bank has issued regulations limiting withdrawal of dollars, however, there are no limits on afghanis.
