KUNDUZ/ KABUL (SW) – The Taliban stormed Kunduz city from four directions in the wee hours on Saturday.
Ruhullah Ahmadzai, spokesman for the Ministry of Defense, said the attack has been repulsed by the security and defense forces. He said the insurgents have been pushed out of the city, and a clean-up operation is underway on the outskirts of the city.
Meanwhile, member of the provincial council, Amruddin Wali, said situation remains tense and fighting continued.
According to the spokesman for the police headquarters, Syed Sarwar Hussaini, top security leadership including interim ministers for defense and interior affairs, Assadullah Khalid and Massoud Andarabi as well as top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, Gen. Scot Miller arrived in Kunduz to assess the situation
President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has condemned the attack. In a statement, Ghani said targeting residential sites and public facilities by the Taliban, and using ordinary civilians as human shields further unveils the Taliban’s vicious intends and is an indication of their enmity towards the people of Afghanistan.
The Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahed, claimed to have inflicted heavy losses on the security forces.
