ASADABAD (SW) – The raging fighting for turf between the pro-Daesh and Taliban insurgents in the Kunar province has denied thousands of children the right to education.
14-year-old Nazeerullah was evidently traumatized when he spoke to Salam Watandar about the state of affairs in his native village of Kotaki in the Chapa Dara district. Children like him are now on the run, living in makeshift camps and with host communities in other part of Kunar and neighboring provinces.
Nazeerullah informed SW his family fled the fighting in Chapa Dara, and is now living with a host family in the Manogay district.
Children like him want the government to arrange for temporary schools for them in the host communities.
Aleem Khan, the father of Nazeerullah, said the raging violence has broken his heart, but what makes him very sad is the fact that the children are deprived of their right to education.
A generous man, Jalaluddin, in the host community has arranged a temporary learning facility for these internally displaced persons in the Manogay. Jalaluddin said children from some 13 IDPs’ families are attending this facility to catchup with their studies.
Meanwhile, Mujeebur Rehman, provincial director education, has confirmed that some 3000 boys and girls have been deprived of their right to education due to the ongoing fighting in Kunar. He said a total of 22 schools are closed in Chapa Dara alone.
Some 2500 families have been forced to flee their homes in this restive part of the district due to the clashes between the Taliban and the pro-Daesh insurgents.
