KABUL (SW): Contracts worth $55.8 million dollars have been signed to ensure electricity supply to more than 40 thousand families in three provinces.
Authorities of the Da Afghanistan Breshna Shirkat (DABS), the power utility, inked these deals at Arg (Presidential palace) with Indian firms. It aims to supply electricity to Logar, Khost and Paktia provinces. The DABS officials said on the occasion the contracts are worth $55.8 million, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
Qudratullah Dilawari, Director DABS, said two Indian companies will execute and finish the project by 2018.Thomas Panela, Country Director ADB, said the project will create thousands of jobs for the locals, and is beneficial for the economy of the whole country.
Despite having immense potential for power generation, only 23 per cent of electricity in Afghanistan is generated locally while 77 per cent is imported from regional countries.
