Thousands of displaced families arrive in Kandahar

22/01/2017

KANDAHAR CITY (SW): Thousands of war-weary families from restive Uruzgan, Zabul and Helmand provinces have taken refuge in Kandahar province.

Authorities at the Kandahar Directorate of Refugees and Repatriations (DoRR), said they do not have designated shelters for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) that is why these families are living at different places in the cities. Abdul Kafi, head of external relations at the provincial DoRR, told Salam Watandar that most of these IDPs have not received any aid.

Authorities informed local and foreign aid agencies have collaborated with them to start the registration process of these needy people.

A number of these IDPs told Salam Watandar they have been waiting in freezing cold outside the DoRR office to get some help. Officials informed that some aid materials have arrived, but they have appealed for more considering the large number of needy people.

Abdul Kafi noted that there are two townships available for homeless persons, but only for those families who repatriate as refugees.
