KABUL (SW) – Thousands of disabled children are deprived of their basic right to have education, officials acknowledged here on Wednesday.
The Ministry of Education and the Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission (AIHRC) joined hands for a conference on this issue under the label of ‘Coordination Conference on Promotion of General and Special Education ’.
Addressing the moot, Mohammad Ali Mohibi, director for disabled persons’ rights at the AIHRC, said out of some 196,000 disabled persons in the country, up to 2.7 per cent are children. He said these children are eligible for education, but only around 3790 have the opportunities to seek general and special education.
Meanwhile, officials at the MoE asserted over 4000 children with disabilities are attending schools including 1549 girls and 2758 boys.
Torpekay Momand, head of the secondary education affairs at the MoE, said a total of 3.7 million children are deprived of education nationwide which also include children with disabilities.
It was stressed a database should be developed about children with disabilities to ensure proper planning and provision of education for them.
