KABUL (SW) – The Al-Jazeera has claimed the U.S. and Taliban have agreed upon a 14 months transition period.
According to the report, discussions are continuing on the Taliban's opposition towards Washington's support for the government in Kabul during the transition period. It stressed that the agreement will include the formation of an interim government in Kabul involving the Taliban to occupy ministries.
The Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen has rejected these reports.
The report added atmosphere seems positive and a final agreement seemed possible.
The talks began last Thursday in Doha on the heels of the killing of two US soldiers on Wednesday in Afghanistan as well as suicide bombing at a wedding ceremony killing scores of civilians.
The agreement is expected to include the withdrawal of more than 13,000 US troops from Afghanistan with a clear timetable, the Taliban's main demand, along with a ceasefire between the Taliban and the Americans or at least "reduction in violence."
The deal, if reached, would be historic, 18 years after the US invasion of Afghanistan and the ouster of the Taliban from power in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks.
US President Donald Trump said again on Tuesday: "We have been there for 18 years, this is ridiculous," describing the negotiations with Kabul and the Taliban as good.
