The Taliban on Maimana – Jawzjan highway cause fears

01/03/2018

KABUL (SW): Locals have informed that the Taliban continue to stop, search and even kill passengers travelling on the Maimana – Jawzjan highway.

A month ago, with the launch of the operation ‘Naveed – 8’ by the security forces in Faryab, the nearby villagers hoped the military operation would continue until complete removal of the Taliban from their villages, however, the operation ‘Naveed – 8’ has been stopped for unknown reasons while parts of the highway is still under the grip of  the Taliban.

According to the residents, the security forces have checkpoints at approximately few hundred meters of distance from the Taliban’s check points, however, the security forces do not interfere in the Taliban’s affairs.

Karim Yourish, Faryab police spokesperson, rejecting these allegations, told Salam Watandar that the Maimana – Jawzjan highway will be completely cleared of the Taliban.

Tahir Rahmani, head of the Faryab Provincial Council, has said the security officials are only making empty promises to the public, however, so far no serious action has been taken by them.

Faryab province is one of the relatively insecure provinces in the north of the country, and according to sources, in addition to the Taliban, Daesh forces have also started operating in a number of areas in this province.
