LASHKARGAH (SW): The Taliban militants are believed to marching on the Lashkargah city in southern Helmand province after overrunning a number of check posts on the main highway leading to the city.
Mohammad Karim Attal, head of the provincial council while addressing a press conference here on Tuesday said that if urgent measures are not put in place, the city would witness the fate like Kunduz.
They demanded swift and fundamental reforms in the leadership of the Afghan National Police (ANP) and the Afghan National Army (ANA) at the provincial level. “Those security officials who came here from Kabul to lead the campaign against the militants are reluctant, if the war is not properly led, the armed rebels would enter Lashkargah very soon.”
Hayatullah Hayat, the provincial governor acknowledges the needs for reform. He stressed that following consultations with the central government the issue of security officials abandoning their security posts would be resolved. The governor noted that security plans designed for Naad-e-Ali, Marja and Garmsir districts would be executed soon. “We would bring reforms in the police force and would defeat the enemy who is hiding in villages”, he said.
Col. Ahmad Shah Salim, the district police chief for Nawa district said in this regard that if they do not get additional support, the district might well fall to the Taliban. He said that a number of check posts have been stormed by the Taliban and their satellite contact with the posts is cut-off.
