The siege of hundreds of soldiers in Faryab; “dead bodies have decayed”

13/08/2017

MAIMANA (SW): Local officials in Ghormach district of Faryab province say that security forces are facing food supply shortage since the past one month and 500 security forces are now under the siege of the Taliban.

Abdullah Waqif, the chief of Ghormach district, said that the security forces are stationed at the Chinatown outpost and 6 others outposts located in Aab Garmak village. According to him, this has been repeatedly reported to government officials, but so far the slightest attention has not been paid to this issue. “4 security forces were killed in the recent clashes, but they are "decaying and smelling" due to the lack of morgue and transportation facilities”, informed Waqif.

Ghormach District chief noted that another army battalion stationed in the district center has not received military supplies for 6 months.

But, a soldier who wished anonymity told Salam Watandar that the soldiers who have not received military and food supplies reach 1 thousand. The soldier said that the Taliban's equipment is more advanced than the ammunition of the security forces, and ‘this is surely crucial in determining the fate of the war’. “They are suffering from lack of air support, and due to stoppage of helicopter flights, for months the dead bodies of the security forces have not been transferred to the capital and these bodies are decaying”, added the soldier.

He accused the 209th Shahin Corps of negligence. Salam Watandar wished to have the views of the Ministry of Defense officials and the 209th Shahin Corps, but to no avail.

Qari Yousuf Ahmadi, a spokesman for the Taliban, confirmed the capture of Ghormach district in a statement to the media, saying that a number of military equipment and vehicles have fallen into Taliban’s hands.

In the past two years, this is the fourth time Ghormach district of Faryab has fallen into the hands of the Taliban.
