The Logari women’s battle against poverty

02/04/2018

PUL-I-ALAM (SW): Tens of millions of dollars have been spent on training and educating women in Logar, yet many of them remain jobless and illiterate.

Muslima Hashimi, a Logar-resident, is the sole breadwinner for a family of seven people. This woman informed Salam Watandar that the training she received at a session in Logar organized by a civil society organization helped her prepare for the hardships of life. With the help of this session, she founded a tailoring workshop in the province training up to 20 needy women and girls.

Muslima is determined to expand this training center, and add literacy programs to it.

In the meantime, a number of other Logari women have expressed apprehensions about the prevailing poverty and ragging insecurity. They stressed if the local administration strives towards providing job opportunities for the educated and skilled women in the province, their problems would be resolved to great extent.

The directorate of women affairs in the province acknowledges these impediments.

Shema Zargar, head of the directorate of women affairs in Logar, said in this regard that as many as 100 trained and educated women and girls have been recruited in various public and private sector offices here.

In some analysts’ views, things are improving in Logar. Anita Ghazanfari, women rights activist, said more and more opportunities for women and girls are emerging in the province. She, however, stressed the government should take even more robust measures to further improve the situation. She underlined that women and girls are still faced with multiple impediments hindering their quest for education and technical skills.

The Taliban’s clout over the provincial capital Pul-i-Alam, as well as the Baraki Barak, Mohammad Agha and Khusi distircts is also a major obstacle in this regard where girls are forced to quit schools after grade six.

The local civil society has urged the government and the international community to ensure more opportunities for Logari women to seek education and technical skills.
