KABUL (SW): Social media is very popular among the youth in Afghanistan, and the number of social media users has been increasing with each passing day.
Social media is generally used for fun, socialization and communication etc, but Wais Barekzai, a famous facebook user, told Salam Watandar that he only uses facebook for social causes.
Legions of followers have liked his page, which is estimated to have around 1,132, 000 followers in and out of the country.
Barekzai is 25-year old and has a degree in administration management. He said that he made his facebook account back in 2009 and the only reason behind this was to raise awareness through it.
Barakzai said that he regularly posts breaking news, current affairs, and beautiful pictures of the provinces, campaign for blood donation, charity campaigns, promotion of the locally made products, and campaign against violence against women.
Barakzai said that he is currently posting about blood donation campaign and about missing children. He added that he posts about 10 missing children each day.
He told that a few days ago, he posted the picture of a missing boy and after 15 minutes, the child’s parents found their son.
Zahid, a father whose daughter went missing during Eid days, found about his missing daughter by visiting Barekzai’s facebook page.
Zahid told Salam Watandar that his daughter, Sabrina, was missing but as social media users start sharing Barekzai’s post, he found her daughter within hours.
He said that facebook has done a great service to him because he did not go to mosque or TV to ask them to announce the missing daughter since it might have taken more time but through facebook, he found her daughter sooner.
Meanwhile, Khalid, a man who found a missing 7 years old boy in Kabul, said that he sent the boy’s picture to Barekzai, and after he shared it on his facebook page, the mother of the missing boy contacted him and found her son.
Wais Barekzai has been honored for his hardwork and dedication by the National Security Council and a number of civil society institutions.
He has also won the Rumi Award as the best social media user.
