The children who survive on the garbage

KABUL (SW): The harsh winter has multiplied the miseries faced by a number of poor children in Kabul who survive on the filth and garbage in the city.

It rarely happens when one gets out of home and does not notice children scavenging in the garbage dumps in different parts of the city. These children usually go the garbage dumping sites in groups on daily basis. Most of them seem to have grown together, but due to absolute poverty they often fight with each other over what they find on these stinky and hazardous sites.

Salam Watandar reporter met such a group of young boys and a girl in the city on Monday. They were searching through piles of garbage in freezing temperatures. The question is how much they earn and at what cost?

The children looked at the reporter with weary and innocent eyes, but continued looking for metals, edibles, and things that could be used to warm their homes in the harsh winter. Their tiny hands were littered with filth and scars.

Zakia, a young girl in this group, said she was looking for anything that would help her warm her home in the winter. In summer, she said she does the same job to fetch some money by selling what she collects from the garbage. Najib, a young boy in this group, said he and his friend even look for things that can be consumed to kill the hunger.
