KABUL (SW): The tradition of ‘Nawrozi’ in which a would-be bride’s family receives plenty of gifts from the would-be groom has been hurting many poor families.
This relatively new tradition compels the groom’s family to buy new cloths, jewelry, plenty of food items for the bride’s family on the new lunar year’s eve. It has been seen that not many would-be bride’s families oppose it, however, many would-be grooms have expressed frustration towards this additional burden on them.
Some young girls too said they feel compelled to follow this tradition despite the understanding about its financial implication of the boy’s family.
One such girl Nargis, medical student in Kabul, told Salam Watandar that the tradition of ‘Nawrozi’ has evolved into an important tradition despite the financial constraints it causes. Farhad, a young boy engaged to a girl, said the traditional meeting between the two families can also be complimented with modest gifts rather than spending all fortune on lavish gifts.
Mohammad Esa, a Kabul-based sociologist, said in this regard that the whole society is moving towards unwanted materialism in the wake of growing poverty.
