The apex court approves extension of NUG term

21/04/2019

KABUL (SW) – The Supreme Court has approved extension of the National Unity Government’s term till forthcoming presidential polls in the country.

This comes as a number of presidential candidates, legal experts and politicians are calling for establishment of an interim set-up to replace the NUG until the next polls.

A ruling by the apex court circulating in the media suggests it has deemed continuation of the president and his aides’ terms as the only practical and logical solution under current circumstances. “After completion of the presidential elections, for thirty to sixty days, on 1st date of the month of Jawza the president’s term ends, and it elaborates that the president’s legitimate terms only ends when the presidential polls are completed and a new individual to resume charge at the presidency is elected”.

Meanwhile, Abdullah Shifaey, member of the Commission for the Oversight of Implementation of the Constitution, has claimed the presidential polls are delayed for unknown reasons. He said without a proper alternative in place, putting an end to the tenure of the NUG is not in the favor of the country.

Shah Hussain Murtazavi, deputy spokesman for the President, has said there are no ambiguities in regard to the tenure. He said the President has six more months to serve until his term comes to an end.
