The ambiguous fate of the Electoral Commission’s proposal and the silence of the Arg

14/08/2017

KABUL (SW): The Free and Fair Election Organization of Afghanistan (FIFA) is worried about the time delaying of Arg (Presidential Palace), with each passing day as elections day is coming close, but the Independent Election Commission’s proposal to the government has not yet been rejected or approved.

Mohammad Yousuf Rashid, the director of FIFA, told a press conference here in Kabul on Monday that for over five months, the Independent Election Commission’s proposal has been sent to the government, but the fate of the plan has so far not been clear.

According to the director of FIFA, the discussion of ethnicities, population, division of election districts, the list of voters, and the electoral process are issues that are not easily resolved.

“Resolving the social and political complexity along with technical problems in provinces are directly related to the fate of IEC’s proposal”, added Rashid.

Maliha Hassan, a member of IEC, assured that the Election Commission is committed to performing its duties in the best way possible.

Salam Watandar wished to have the views of Arg on this matter, but efforts were to no avail.

Electoral reform is one of the promises of the leaders of the National Unity Government to citizens, but contrary to the expectations of the people, there is still no practical steps taken in this regard by the government.
