HERAT (SW): Tens of prisoners in Herat who have been transferred from Iran a while ago, went on a hunger strike to protest their extended imprisonment terms.
These more than 110 prisoners have said that their cases have not received the slightest attention so far. They said that while they have spent some time in prison in Iran, the Afghan justice and law enforcement authorities have again ruled on their cases and have increased the length of their imprisonment.
These prisoners went on to say that only few months of imprisonment time was left, however, the Afghan government has ruled that their sentence should resume from the beginning. The protesters claimed that the officials have promised them for their release many times, however, they have never taken any practical steps to release them.
Jilani Farhad, spokesperson for the Governor of Herat, said that they have tasked a committee to examine the situation of these prisoners, and soon all the problems of these prisoners will be resolved.
We tried to get the opinion of the authorities in Herat central jail and the prosecutor’s office, but they refused to talk.
