LASHKARGAH (SW): The directorate for refugees and repatriates in southern Helmand province has confirmed that at least ten thousands families have been displaced by the latest spate of fighting.
Naqeebullah Zmaryal, director at the directorate for refugees and repatriates, told Salam Watandar that ragging violence across the province has compelled thousands of families to flee their homes. He noted that war-weary civilians are on the move from Nava, Naad-e-Ali, Marja and Garamseer district, and from the outskirts of the provincial capital Lashkargah as well. According to him, these needy civilians have taken refuge in central and other relatively safer parts of the province.
Zmaryal added that some eight thousand families have arrived in Lashkargah while another estimated two thousand have migrated to Kandahar province. He added that most of these displaced families were faced with immediate threats to their lives in the war-affected parts of the province. The displaced families are faced with multiple problems, for instance six families are compelled to share a house of four rooms, he said.
Khan Mohammad and Bibi Sameera are among such refugees. Renting a small house in Lashkargah, the couple said no one has come for their rescue so far. “We fled our homes without bringing literally anything with us, we just managed to flee with our children”, he said.
Hayatullah Hayat, the provincial governor, claimed that efforts are underway to improve security across the province.
