Teachers protest against non-payment of salaries

11/06/2019

PARWAN (SW) – Dozens of teachers in Parwan province on Tuesday took to the streets against non-payment of salaries.

Parasto Habibi, director of the Afghanistan Education Assistance Project in Parwan, said she has not received salary for the past 18 months, and the education directorate has not taken any action in this regard. The protesting teachers accused the head of directorate for education for being ignorant about this.

The protesting students said they have not been allowed to enter school on the directive of the directorate for education.

The protesters warned if the government did not address their problems, they will continue with the protests.

This comes as President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani issued an order last month to cancel contracts with the Afghanistan Education Assistance Project schools. The President ordered the Ministry of Education to enroll students of these schools within the framework of the public schools and appoint these teachers in public schools.

Abdul Zahir Hakim, the head of directorate of education in Parwan, said that the salaries of all teachers at these schools have been paid, their students have been enrolled to literacy centers, and there are no problems in this regard. Without naming anyone, he said ‘hidden hands’ are behind this protest.
