KABUL (SW): Tayaba Noori is a female journalist who has been working in the southern Afghanistan for the past seven years now but is still afraid to use her real name in her profession.
Born in a conservative family, it was near impossible for her to get the permission of her parents to enter the field of media. Having graduated from the department of “Sharia”, she was compelled to enter the practical life as a journalists to earn livelihood for her needy family.
Having aging parents, Tayaba said the only other person in their family was her brother; that too young to work.
Tayaba told Salam Watandar that her parents granted her the right to work, only after her relentless push and commitment. That liberty too came with the conditions that she cannot use her real name and would only cover women-related affairs in the media.
She only got a bit lucky after her marriage when her life partner allowed her to keep working. “I am still not allowed to use my real name, many of my relatives do not know that I am working in the media and if they come to know”, she said.
Tayaba further said that the men-dominated conservative society in Afghanistan still does not acknowledge the right of women as equal citizens.
In her message to the girls and women across the country, Tayaba said they should not accept the defeat and keep striving for their rights.
