‘Tax waiver not in the interest of the country’

30/01/2019

KABUL (SW) – The Ministry of Finance has hinted to extend relaxations in the payment for the outstanding income tax in the next year as well.

Shamaroz Khan Masjidi, spokesman for the Ministry of Finance, has said those companies and other commercial entities who have not paid their taxes between the years of 2002 and 2008 can pay their outstanding taxes with 90 per cent waiver. He said the waiver would be reduced to 80 per cent till the end of next year. He clarified this discount is only for a selective 8000 companies.

However, a number of analysts fear continuation of such a situation would promote this negative trend of tax evasion.

Muhibullah Sharif, an expert on economic affairs, said this would result in tax evasion adopt legal shape.

However, the MoF spokesman has clarified this would not be allowed to happen.

Earlier this year, the tax waiver of up to 95 per cent was offered to defaulters. According to officials, this move helped the government collect AFN 10 billion worth of taxes for the years 1993 – 2008 by offering waivers worth AFN 20 billion.
