Targeted violence on the rise in Kabul

KABUL (SW): Several media activists, political analysts, businessmen and even an athlete have been attacked in the capital Kabul in recent months but the culprits behind such attacks remain at large causes panic among the residents.

In one such incident, unidentified gunmen entered a dormitory in the capital’s western neighborhood and shot dead two Afghan National Army (ANA) men.

Prior to the incident mentioned above, Ahmad Sayeedi, a political analyst, Haji Nawruz Hamzayee, a businessman, Salem Wahdat, Head of Bukhdi News Agency and Amanullah Attayee, Head of a private TV called Asia, were attacked in the capital.

Analysts believe such targeted attacks have a history in western Herat province but has recently emerged in Kabul.

According to some recent reports, 20 persons have been targeted and many of whom have been killed over a week in Kabul.

Jawid Kohistani, a military analyst, said in this regard that terrorist networks by carrying out such attacks in big cities, seek to influence people for their goals.

He believed that attacks on influential persons in the big cities cause people to lose trust in the government about ensuring citizen’s safety.

He further said that the government should take specific approach in the fight against targeted attacks or otherwise it would destabilize the country.

Najib Danesh, Deputy Spokesman for Ministry of Interior, told Salam Watandar that such targeted attacks have increased recently compared to the previous years.

He emphasized that security organizations have seriously investigated such cases and have managed to prevent many of attacks aimed at known persons.

The uptick in the targeted attacks is also linked with illegal selling and buying of guns in the country.

The targeted attacks are often carried out by people riding motorcycle who are linked with networks masterminding such attacks
