LASHKARGAH (SW): A shadow customs facility of the Taliban on a highway in Nimroz province has been dismantled by the security forces.
Gen. Wali Mohammad Ahmadzai, Commander of the Afghan National Army (ANA)’s 215 – Maiwand Corps, informed Salam Watandar that the Taliban’s so-called customs facility at the Zarang – Dilaram highway has been dismantled. He further said units of the ANA have been deployed to the site to expel the rebels from the area.
The Corps Commander further said additional check points have been established to ensure peace and security on this important highway. Gen. Ahmadzai said these measures would provide relief from extortion to passengers and traders travelling on this route.
Baaz Mohammad Nasiri, chairman of the Nimroz provincial council, has stressed that the security forces shall pay serious attention towards ensuring safety of the civilians on this highway. He particularly stressed upon importance of this highway for trade with Iran.
According to some estimates, the Taliban used to collect up to AFN 5 million as ‘customs’ from traders on the Zarang – Dilaram highway on daily basis. The Taliban, however, continue to collect such customs on other highways including in neighboring Farah proivne.
