Taliban’s network of tunnels dismantled in Kunduz

11/12/2017

KUNDUZ CITY (SW):  The Special Forces of the Afghan National Army (ANA) have dismantled more than fifty tunnels dug by the Taliban as escape routes in the Kunduz province’s Imam Saheb district.

Mohammad Ali Ahmadi, Commander of the 10th Brigade of the Special Forces, told Salam Watandar that the dismantling of the tunnels would deny the Taliban escape routes, and limit their terrorist activities. He added these tunnels have been dismantled during five days of operations.

The tunnels were excavated in Gunbad, Qarghez, Joybegum, Kanjak, Qarghan Tapa and Nau Abad villages of the district.

Commander Ahmadi informed that the Taliban were easily moving between these villages via these tunnels on motorcycles. He added that some tunnels were large enough for even cars to pass through.

Mehboobullah, governor of the district, has acknowledged that a number of villages that were under the clout of the Taliban for the past three years have been cleared now. He vowed to strive towards keeping the villages clear of the militants.

Meanwhile, Zabehullah Mujahed, spokesman for the Taliban, has rejected reports about losing the area. He has said more than ten security forces have been killed in fighting, and only three Taliban fighters got killed and four others got wounded in clashes.
