LASHKARGAH(SW): Mirza Khan Rahimi, Governor Helmand said on Wednesday the security forces have broken the back of the Taliban in this southern province.
Addressing a gathering in the provincial capital, Rahimi said clean-up operations were underway in the northern and southern districts to completely eliminate the rebels. He said the frontline of the Taliban has been crushed and a number of their top commanders killed.
The Governor added that security situation in Helmand was the subject of discussion with the President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani during his trip to the capital Kabul. He added the Taliban were on the defensive and were waging a propaganda war to create fears among the citizen.
This comes at a time when the Taliban have warned residents in some northern districts to evacuate as they prepare to launch grand operation. Security forces however, have termed it a propaganda measure.
Four months ago, the government launched “Zulfiqar Offensives” in Helmand to flush-out the rebels. More than 400 rebels, 93 security forces and seven civilians were reported dead in this operation.
