Taliban’s attacks in Kandahar kill 22 policemen

KANDAHAR CITY (SW): At least 22 Afghan policemen and 45 Taliban militants got killed in Kandahar’s Maiwand and Zheray districts.

Matiullah Helal, deputy spokesman for the Afghan National Police (ANP) in Kandahar city, told Salam Watandar groups of armed Taliban launched coordinated attacks on at least 15 check posts in the province last night. He added 45 Taliban are killed and 35 are wounded, and 22 policemen got martyred while 15 others are wounded.

The clashes erupted at around 08:00 pm last night, and continued till 02:00 Tuesday morning.

Obaidullah Jan, district governor, has said the Taliban had gathered fighters from Uruzgan, Helmand and suburbs of Kandahar, and wished to overrun Maiwand district.

The Taliban spokesman Qari Yosuf Ahmadi has claimed in a statement that 40 security personnel have been killed in a these clashes.
