MAIDAN CITY (SW): At least 16 Taliban militants have been killed in central Maidan Wardak province on Friday as they stormed a number of check posts in the Jalrez district.
Abdul Rehman Mangal, spokesman for the provincial governor told Salam Watandar that the militants targeted these check posts in the past 24 hours. He added that the security forces rebuked the attack, and besides killing 16 rebels, ten more have been wounded.
He noted that the clashes have left 7 policemen and a number of civilian wounded. The spokesman added that the Kabul-Bamyan highway has been cleared for passengers. Mangal also said that clean-up operation in the restive district was still underway.
Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesman for the Taliban, however claimed to have overrun as many as 5 security check posts in Jalrez and have killed a number of security men. These claims have been rejected by the officials.
