KABUL (SW) – Security officials in Badakhshan, Kunduz and Balkh provinces say that despite the Taliban voluntarily declaring a three-day ceasefire during Eid, they have not kept their promise and have attacked a number of Afghan security checkpoints during Eid.
Badakhshan police spokesman Sanaullah Rohani said the Taliban had attacked security posts in Khawan, Darwaz and Raghistan districts on the first day of Eid, but had been pushed back by security forces. He said seven insurgents were killed in Khawan and Darwaz districts and four in Kohistan district.
Security officials in Balkh and Kunduz also confirmed that Taliban insurgents had violated the ceasefire in those provinces and attacked security forces and public buildings.
A number of civil society activists in Jawzjan have called on the Taliban and security forces to agree to a ceasefire in the face of the Corona virus and to take real steps to enforce it.
Reports from Herat, Faryab, Takhar, Sar-e-Pul, Samangan, Jawzjan, Badghis, Ghazni, Farah, Bamyan and Daikundi also indicate that the Taliban have violated the ceasefire in those provinces and have carried out numerous attacks on security forces. There were no immediate reports of injuries or severe damage.
The Ministry of Defense (MoD) and the National Directorate of Security have declined to comment on the Taliban's violation of the ceasefire, but the Interior Ministry has said it will gather information and release it later.
The Taliban have also not commented on ceasefire violations by their militants in some provinces.
