KABUL (SW) – Gen. Scott Miller, commander of NATO's Resolute Support mission and United States Forces – Afghanistan has urged the Taliban to stand by their commitments for reduction in violence.
Flanked by the minister for defense, Assadullah Khalid and minister for interior Massoud Andarabi, he stressed that NATO would continue to support the Afghan security forces. Gen. Miller described the reduction in violence as an important step towards peace in Afghanistan.
The top NATO commander said it was difficult to identify the main perpetrators of violence in Afghanistan in the week of the violence, but stressed efforts would be ensured to assess any attacks during the week.
Gen. Miller insisted that if the Taliban returned to the offensive posture in this week, the U.S. forces would support the Afghan security forces.
Speaking on the occasion, minister Andarabi announced the establishment of a joint mechanism among the defense and interior ministry and Resolute Support to monitor the reduction in violence, and emphasized that the security forces have been put on alert to prepare for all sorts of the situation.
This comes as the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, said on Friday that the US had “come to an understanding with the Taliban” over violence reduction in Afghanistan as officials said an agreement would be signed at the end of the month.
The Taliban have stressed the ‘reduction in violence’ does not mean nationwide ceasefire.
