GHAZNI CITY (SW): The Taliban have taken control of some areas in Ghazni’s Ajristan district, and have torched a number of homes.
Latifa Akbari, chairperson of the provincial council, informed the security forces are retreating from Ajristan after three days of resistance in the face of the Taliban’s assaults. She claimed the Taliban overran two security check posts and torched over hundred homes of the security forces in the nearby villages. She feared if additional troops did not reach in time, the district would completely fell to the Taliban.
Spokesman for the provincial governor, Mohammad Arif Noori, has claimed up to 50 Taliban rebels have been killed in clashes so far. He acknowledged 17 security personnel lost lives in these clashes while 13 more are wounded. The governor’s spokesman charged the Taliban for killing a number of civilians in the area. He echoed fears of a massacre in Ajristan if Special Forces are not dispatched to the area soon.
Meanwhile, Fareed Mashal, spokesman for the police headquarters, has asserted the Special Forces have already reached the area, and the rebels are under assault form air and ground.
