Taliban s siege leads to closure of schools in Nuristan

PARUN (SW): Authorities in Want-Waiygal district of Nuristan province have closed down 6 schools due to possible Taliban attack on the district.

According to the authorities, the district is under the Taliban siege. Rahmatullah Rahmati, chief of the district, told Salam Watandar that the Taliban’s siege is getting stronger. He said the government has not paid attention to the siege. “We fear that the district will fall to the Taliban soon, therefore, the authorities have decided to close down 6 schools for security reasons”, informed Rahmati.

The chief of the district also said the Taliban are re-grouping in Logar and Nuristan provinces to attack this district, but the security officials have not taken the matter seriously yet.

But, Mohsen, provincial director of education, said the closure of the schools is temporary. “Two high schools have been shut since 3 years in Want-Waiygal district”, informed Mohsen. According to provincial education directorate more than 38 schools are open for thousands of male and female students in Want-Waigal district.

Sadullah Payindazoy, has head of provincial council, urged the government to take security measures in order to prevent the possible fall of the district to the Taliban insurgents.

It is worth mentioning that the Want-Waiygal district had fallen to the Taliban 3 times in the past 5 years.
